Story

Roughly one voter in five in Uttar Pradesh belongs to the scheduled castes, the largest Dalit electorate on earth, the bloc whose organisation this batch has chronicled from the BAMCEF seminar to the sarvajan summit, and that bloc, as this series writes, is for the first time in four decades genuinely up for grabs. The elephant that owned it walks the margin, the claimants circle, and every strategist in the state works the same arithmetic the batch’s founder taught them, that whoever holds the hamlet’s fifth holds the balance of the heartland. This closing article of the Bahujan batch maps the inheritance fight as the record currently shows it.

The bloc’s internal map is the fight’s terrain. The Jatavs, the community of Mayawati and the movement’s core, make up more than half the state’s Dalit population, concentrated in the west and centre, the most organised, landed, and Ambedkarite of the scheduled communities, and still, the recent cycles’ survey data indicates, the BSP’s most loyal remnant, though 2024’s readings showed even this core splitting toward the alternatives. The non Jatav majority of the rest, the Pasis of Awadh, the Valmikis, Khatiks, Dhobis, Koris, and the dozens of smaller communities, were the sarvajan era’s loosest bricks and the past decade’s most courted voters, their movement the largest single component of the BJP’s UP arithmetic, the labharthi welfare channel, the micro caste sammelans and icon adoptions, Suheldev’s own article in this series recorded the method, and the Hindutva fold’s offered dignity assembling, by the 2017 through 2022 results, a non Jatav Dalit column the size of the BSP’s old core.

The 2024 election redrew the map again and its reading is the file’s freshest page. The opposition campaign’s constitution frame, the samvidhan khatre mein messaging built on the reservation debate’s season, moved Dalit votes toward the INDIA bloc at scale, the post poll analyses, the CSDS Lokniti data most cited among them, recording the SP alliance’s Dalit share surging past the BSP’s for the first time, the SP’s PDA candidacies converting reserved seats across the state, Faizabad’s Awadhesh Prasad the emblem this series has already filed, the ASP’s Nagina opening the young flank, and the BSP’s residue falling to its historic floor, the bloc thus split four ways, a remnant loyalty, a welfare column, a constitutionalist surge, and a generational startup, with no single owner for the first time since the cycle yatras.

The claimants’ cases close the map. The BSP’s is the brand and the core, dormancy’s argument the decline file stated. The BJP’s is delivery, the welfare pipe and the inclusion offer, running against the constitution season’s damage and the atrocity headlines the caste batches carry. The SP’s is the PDA’s fresh proof, running against the memory this batch recorded at the guest house and the Yadav Dalit village line the abolition audit drew, the alliance’s durability the analysts’ standing question. And the ASP’s is generational authenticity, the schools and the scarf, running against a startup’s arithmetic in a state whose scale devours startups. The series’ finding is the terrain’s own, that the inheritance is genuinely open, that the fight for it will decide the state’s next majority, and that every claimant is running, knowingly, on some fraction of Kanshi Ram’s original method, the founder’s machine dead or dormant and his blueprint, forty years on, the market’s only text.

For the UP Files, the Bahujan batch closes where the movement’s own logic points, at the ballot’s arithmetic rather than any leader’s fate. The century this batch chronicled took the state’s most excluded fifth from the village’s edge to the secretariat and built, in doing so, the psychological revolution the assertion file entered as permanent, and the batch’s last finding is the era’s own, that revolutions of dignity outlive their vehicles, the vote they created now the most contested property in the state’s politics. The party that currently governs the state those votes will decide, the saffron machine of the next batch, took its own lessons from everything this batch recorded, and the UP Files proceeds to it, the BJP ascendancy, with the ledger open.
