The Ketan Agarwal murder case has become one of the most closely watched criminal investigations in Maharashtra this year, not for any political dimension but for the sheer calculation investigators say went into it. Agarwal, a twenty six year old Pune based realtor, died on the eighteenth of June after falling from a cliff at Lohagad Fort near Lonavala. What initially carried the appearance of a tragic accident has since unravelled into what police now describe as a months long conspiracy involving his own fiancee and the man she was allegedly involved with at the same time.

A court in Vadgaon Maval extended the police custody of the two accused, Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary, until the third of July, after prosecutors argued that several elements of the case still required deeper investigation. Among the unresolved threads cited in court were the precise location on the fort where the fatal fall occurred and the disappearance of Agarwal’s passport in the days surrounding his death.

How the Ketan Agarwal Murder Case Came Together

According to investigators, the relationship between Goyal, twenty, and Chaudhary, twenty two, predated her engagement to Agarwal, and police allege the two had been planning his death for an extended period before it occurred. The conspiracy is said to have been finalised by the end of May, with an earlier attempt on Agarwal’s life allegedly made on the fourteenth of June, four days before the fatal incident at Lohagad Fort.

During that first attempt, Agarwal reportedly survived by grabbing onto nearby bushes after being pushed, and Goyal is alleged to have later explained the incident away as accidental, claiming she had pushed him in a startled reaction to a snake. Police now believe this account, accepted at the time, was the first indication of a far more deliberate plan that had simply failed on its initial attempt.

Following that failed effort, investigators say Chaudhary altered his approach and personally followed the couple to Lohagad Fort on the eighteenth of June to ensure that a second opportunity would not be missed. Officials allege the two had agreed upon a signal in advance, with Goyal instructed to pause on the pretext of drinking water or adjusting her shoelaces, a gesture meant to indicate to Chaudhary that the moment to act had arrived while simultaneously positioning her at a safe distance from Agarwal during the fall.

The Financial Trail Investigators Are Examining

One of the more striking elements to emerge in the Ketan Agarwal murder case involves money. Police sources allege that Goyal sought close to one crore rupees from Agarwal under the pretext of wedding shopping and related marriage expenses, only to transfer the funds to Chaudhary instead, reportedly to help him achieve financial stability. Investigators say Chaudhary, who came from a comparatively modest financial background, had indicated he would need approximately three years to become independently secure.

According to police, the two allegedly agreed that Goyal would remain unmarried for that period following Agarwal’s death, a delay investigators believe was intended to avoid drawing suspicion toward their relationship and to allow time for Goyal’s family to eventually accept Chaudhary once public attention around the case had faded.

Call detail records have also become central to the investigation. Police say Goyal spoke with Chaudhary for several minutes roughly thirty four minutes before the fatal fall, a call investigators are treating as a final confirmation exchanged shortly before the act.

The Cancelled Bali Trip and the Missing Passport

A separate strand of the investigation has emerged from the account given by a driver hired to take the couple to Mumbai for what had been planned as a pre wedding trip to Bali. The driver told investigators that Goyal appeared reluctant to travel on the day in question and alleged that her brother had forced her into the vehicle after picking her up in Pune, with a heated argument reportedly breaking out between the siblings during the drive.

The journey reportedly continued toward Mumbai airport after Agarwal and several family members joined the group, but the planned trip was called off after Agarwal discovered upon arrival that his passport was missing. Investigators have flagged the missing passport as one of several unresolved details that justified extending the custodial interrogation of both accused, alongside continued efforts to establish the exact spot on Lohagad Fort where the fall took place.

What Happens Next in the Investigation

With custody extended until the third of July, Pune rural police are expected to continue questioning both Goyal and Chaudhary while also pursuing digital evidence, including recovered data from mobile devices that investigators believe were partially deleted following Agarwal’s death. Family members on both sides have reportedly also been questioned as police work to corroborate the financial and communication trail they say points toward a premeditated conspiracy rather than an accidental fall.

Cases built substantially on circumstantial and digital evidence, including call records and recovered deleted data, often take considerable time to develop into formal charges that can withstand scrutiny in court. The Ketan Agarwal murder case, given the scale of detail investigators have already made public, is likely to remain a closely tracked story in Maharashtra in the weeks ahead, particularly as the custodial interrogation period concludes and prosecutors decide how to formally proceed against the two accused.
