Story
On October 4, 1992, two months before the domes fell, Mulayam Singh Yadav gathered the fragments of the Janata tradition at Lucknow and founded the Samajwadi Party, taking for its symbol the bicycle, the vehicle of the ordinary man, and for its colours the red and green of socialism and the soil. The party has since governed Uttar Pradesh for roughly a decade in aggregate, supplied the state its longest running opposition, and evolved, in the description this article’s title states and its body examines, from a doctrine’s vehicle into a family’s firm that still speaks the doctrine’s language, the tension between the two identities being the party’s permanent inner weather.
The doctrine was Lohia’s, and its UP genealogy runs through this series’ churn batch. Ram Manohar Lohia’s socialism, distinct from the Nehruvian and Marxist varieties, put caste at the centre of Indian inequality, demanded the backward majority’s share of power in the slogan of the hundred in proportion to their numbers, distrusted English as the elite’s moat, and prescribed permanent agitation as democracy’s vitamin, and the SP’s founding generation, Mulayam foremost with the ideologue Janeshwar Mishra beside him, carried the inheritance directly, the party’s constitution, its anti English gestures, its kisan and quota politics, and its street agitation repertoire all Lohiaite standards, the founder’s portrait sharing the party’s stages with Lohia’s own. The inheritance was real and the series records it as such, the SP’s governments enacting the pension, allowance, and education schemes of the socialist canon, the batch’s ninth article audits them, and the party’s cadre culture, the red cap that became its uniform, preserving a plebeian idiom no rival matches.
The firm grew inside the doctrine, and by the millennium had annexed it. The founder’s brothers and cousins took the party’s and the state’s commanding posts, Shivpal Singh Yadav the organisation’s enforcer and public works, Ram Gopal Yadav the parliamentary strategist, the extended house accumulating assembly seats, district boards, and cooperative empires across the Yadav belt, and the succession settling, after the feud the batch narrates, on the founder’s son Akhilesh, with the daughter in law Dimple in parliament, the clan’s second generation spreading through the constituencies, a genealogy the state’s press maps at every election the way court gazetteers once mapped the taluqdars. The party’s defenders answer the dynasty charge with the counting the previous batches taught, that every north Indian party save the cadre based ones runs on families, that the house’s candidates win primaries of the ballot box, and that the firm gave the backward castes what firms give, continuity and protection. The critics answer that Lohia’s own test, the doctrine against dynasty, is failed on its face, and the series files both columns.
The machine’s third element was muscle, and the ledger must state it in the register the subject demands. Across its governing decades the party stood accused, by opponents, commissions of the period, and a substantial press record, of accommodating the state’s strongman politics, tickets and patronage extended to figures with serious criminal cases, the crime batches of this series name them within the court record, and the countercharge stands beside it, the party’s answer that every UP formation of the era, its accusers included, ran the same accommodation, and that the goondaraj label, the batch’s ninth article weighs it, was as much the rival’s slogan as the state’s statistic. What is not contested is the reputation’s cost, the law and order narrative becoming the party’s standing electoral wound, harvested by its opponents in 2017 with results the BJP batch records.
The party’s evolution under the second generation closes the file for now. Akhilesh Yadav’s SP, the batch’s sixth article profiles him, kept the base and changed the dress, expressways and laptops alongside the red caps, the 2024 PDA formulation, the backward, Dalit, and minority coalition, reaching past the party’s Yadav core toward Lohia’s original arithmetic, and the result, the party’s best Lok Sabha performance in its history, suggesting the doctrine’s third act may yet be its largest. For the UP Files, the SP is Mandal’s institutional child and the state’s great test of whether a movement can survive becoming a family, a question the batch’s remaining articles, the formula, the incident, the fixer, the feud, and the village, examine file by file, beginning with the arithmetic that made everything else possible.
